- Originates from Katharkers or "story tellers"
- Today it features some ritual and temple dancing
- It was frowned upon by the Victorians when India was ruled by the British Empire but today it has regained its popularity.
- There are four different styles of Kathak dance, known as Gharanas. These are Lucknow, Jaipur, Benares and Raigarh.
- Lucknow features lots of graceful movements with elegant and natural poise.
- Jaipur puts importance on complicated footwork and lots of spins.
- Benares has a greater use of the floor.
- Raigarh was established in the 20th century.
