Kathak Research

  • One of the 8 forms of traditional Indian dance
  • Originates from Katharkers or "story tellers"
  • Today it features some ritual and temple dancing
  • It was frowned upon by the Victorians when India was ruled by the British Empire but today it has regained its popularity.
  • There are four different styles of Kathak dance, known as Gharanas. These are Lucknow, Jaipur, Benares and Raigarh.
  • Lucknow features lots of graceful movements with elegant and natural poise.
  • Jaipur puts importance on complicated footwork and lots of spins.
  • Benares has a greater use of the floor.
  • Raigarh was established in the 20th century.
